Big Bang is the title of the shot by French photographer Armand Sarlangue chosen as the overall winner of the Drone Photo Awards 2022, the biggest aerail photography competition in the world, part of the Siena Awards, an international festival of visual arts.
The evocative image comes from Iceland and shows a secondary fissure a few hundred meters from the main crater of Fagradalsfjall volcano, captured from above during the last eruptive phase in September 2021.
The overall winning photo, selected by the jury from thousands of images sent by 2,624 participants from 116 countries, will be exhibited, together with other category winners, at the exhibition ‘Above Us Only Sky’ set up on display during the Siena Awards in the ‘Accademia dei Fisiocratici’ Museum of Natural History.
In the Urban category, the winning shot captures the rooftops stretching as far as the eye can see in the Kartoffelraekkerne district, in Oesterbro (Copenhagen). The aerial shot is by the Ukrainian photographer Serhiy Vovk and captures one of the most beautiful districts of the Danish capital, built in the late 1800s for working class families.
In the People category, the winner is the photo Sleeping on a Boat by Bengali photographer Anindita Roy, taken in Dhaka. The capital of Bangladesh, located on the Buriganga River, has a river port, Sadarghat, which is widely used for passenger and service traffic. People from both sides cross the river in small boats, on which the boatmen often sleep at night, as captured in this photograph.
Nature triumphs in Solidarity, the aerial shot by Iranian photographer Mehdi Mohebipor taken in Mazandaran, Iran, winner in the Wildlife category, which captures a crowd of flamingos that stay close to each other during the day for protection.
The photo entitled Meeting by Swiss photographer David Rouge arrives from the Namib Desert, who wins first place in the Nature category with an evocative encounter between the dunes and the South Atlantic Ocean.
An overhead view of the participants in the Bieg Piastów ski event held in Szklarska PorÄ™ba, Poland, wins the Sports category for Polish photographer Daniel Koszela with the image Falling Skiers.
the Abstract category. The image shows the hard work of laborers in a salt pan in Habra, India, where the salt is moved to form circular lines to allow slow evaporation under the sun before being collected in baskets at the end of the day.
Again from Poland Like a Painted Picture shot by Polish photographer Krzysztof Krawczyk, who wins first place in the Wedding category. The photo captures the effect of the sun on a body of water, a felled tree and a brave bride lying on it to complete the magnificent picture drawn by nature.
Finally, the Russian photographer Dmitry Kokh wins the Series category with Abandoned Weather Station.
In the Video category, the Pangea Prize is won by Italian Mauro Pagliai in the General section, the Ukrainian Yurii Bobyr in Photojournalism and the Croatian Alen Tkalcec for the best Travel video.
